By March 28, 2023, an outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had spread to nearly every country in the world, and more than 6.8 million people had died after contracting the respiratory virus. Of these, more than 1.1 million deaths occurred in the United States.

Almost every country and region around the world has been affected by the COVID-19 disease. The virus was once again circulating at very high rates in late 2021, even in countries with relatively high vaccination rates such as the United States and Germany. As the rate of new infections rose, some countries in Europe, such as Germany and Austria, once again tightened restrictions, particularly targeting those who had not yet been vaccinated. However, by the spring of 2022, the rate of new infections had decreased in many countries and restrictions were once again lifted.
What are the symptoms of the virus?
It can take up to 14 days before symptoms of the disease begin to be noticed. The most commonly reported symptoms are fever and dry cough, which leads to shortness of breath. The initial symptoms are similar to those of other common viruses such as the common cold and flu. These diseases tend to spread more during the colder months, but there is no conclusive evidence that temperature affects the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
