A heart-wrenching photo of a pregnant woman in the bombed-ravaged Mariupol maternity hospital has won this year’s World Press Photo Award.
The winning photo shows Irina Kalinina, 32, carrying an injured pregnant woman from a maternity hospital that was damaged during a Russian airstrike in Mariupol in March last year.
Her child – who was named Miron after the word for “peace” – was born dead. The World Press Photo website said that Kalinina died half an hour after giving birth.

A Russian official warned on Friday about an “uncontrollable” arms race involving several nuclear powers, the state-owned RIA news agency said.
