Smartphone penetration rates in the United Kingdom have increased every year, reaching an overall figure of 93 percent in 2022. While the survey revised the split of respondents over the age of 55 from 2016, there is a clear increase in the rate of smartphone ownership among those aged 55 and older. In 2016, less than half of all respondents over the age of 55 owned such a device, with that figure eventually rising to 82 percent in 2022. Smartphones are mobile phones that have an operating system with the features of a personal computer. Smartphones began to become more widespread in the late 2000s. The technological advancements made since then have been impressive to say the least. New features become available with every new smartphone model, and most smartphone owners report buying a new smartphone because their current device is out of date.

Although smartphones have put the power of information in the hands of the general public, they have also brought with them some negative effects. Accidents while driving are on the rise, although most motorists believe that even glancing at the phone while driving is unacceptable.
