Ed Sheeran battles depression in poignant new single 'Boat' – Rolling Stone

ed sheeran did shared an emotional new single, “Boat”, along with a music video for the track. singer’s upcoming album song Reducewas written by The English Beach in Winter and reflects honestly on depression, with Sheeran using a boat as a metaphor for attempting to keep the water at bay.

The video, directed by Mia Barnes, sees Sheeran lounging in waves on a British beach. The visual mirrors the track’s lyrics as the musician tries to break the cycle of sadness: “They say all scars heal, but I know I probably won’t,” sings Sheeran. “The waves will not break my boat.”

“‘Boat’ is the first song I wrote and finished for ReduceSheeran said in a statement. “It’s where it all started, and a good way to kick off the album.”

ReduceOn May 5, Sheeran has the final LP of a set of records named after mathematical symbols. The album was produced by Aaron Dessner of The National.

In March, Sheeran shared the album’s lead single “Eyes Closed”. The track was accompanied by a more cinematic music video following the artist as he wandered from bar to diner, accompanied by a large blue monster symbolizing his grief.

In a recent cover story Rolling stoneSheeran talked about his grief after the death of his close friend Jamal Edwards, and how his death was partly an inspiration for the new album.

“Nobody really talks about their feelings where I come from,” he said. “People think it’s weird to have a therapist in England… I think being able to talk to someone and just vent and not feel guilty for venting is very helpful. Obviously, like, I’ve lived a very privileged life. So my friends always looked at me like, ‘Oh, it’s not so bad.’ ,

Sheeran will also be the subject of a Disney+ documentary Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It AllAll set to premiere on 3 May. The four-part documentary will chart Sheeran’s rise from a stuttering child to a stadium-filling superstar, featuring never-before-seen footage from his personal archives, new interviews with Sheeran and his family, intimate… performance, and more.
