Game producer Josh Wardle talks newsweek in January 2022 and explained how they decided on the rules of the game.

“There’s a reason each word is five letters long and you’re allowed six tries to guess it,” he said. “This may sound arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of attempts players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I learned that five letters and six attempts was the ideal sweet spot. It’s limited enough to feel challenging and make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
