A spokesman for the US Secret Service said the driver of a truck was in custody after it crashed into a security barrier at Lafayette Square, adjacent to the White House grounds.
US Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi wrote on Twitter Monday night: “No Secret Service or White House personnel were injured and the cause and manner of the accident is under investigation.”
The Secret Service said some streets and pedestrians were closed and the nearby Hay Adams Hotel was evacuated, reports Fox 5 Television News.
After initially crashing, the driver hit the barriers a second time, WUSA reported, citing a witness report.
WUSA television showed live pictures of a truck stopped near steel bollards and uniformed law-enforcement officers approaching the vehicle.
